First step into spirituality, know yourself!

Before introducing the spiritual practice itself, I want to talk about the central aspect of spiritual awakening and the development of medium abilities and psychic animism, which is self-improvement.

Sounds like coach bullsh!t but, first of all, why do you want to live an spiritual life? These practices that connect us with our inner selves and the divine will necessarily lead you to face your fears, understand your anger, identify your wounds and heal them. So if you can’t find a purpose for your spiritual journey, it is very unlikely that you will be able to evolve much in it. Maybe you feel a call and want to find out during the path why is that important to you, and that’s okay. As long as you understand that your own development as a human being, to become a better person and use your knowledge for higher purposes, is crucial for reaching the spiritual world in a healthy way, then you are fine.

And I am not saying that someone will stop you from doing harm with your learnings. Oh no, the Divine and everything that is positive that comes from them will respect your free will. However, the law of cause and consequence hits us all, and if you make the wrong choices, especially being aware of your mean intentions, then it will hit you hard. Still, it’s up to you.

Continuing… as you can choose to harm people, so other people can, so other spirits can, or whatever entities you could find on the other side. Which means that, before you open the door to the other side of the veil, you must be sure that what you are inviting in isn’t going to destroy you. How do you know what you are inviting to come in? Easy, by similarity.

Let’s say you really enjoy teasing people. It is not a big deal; you aren’t killing anyone with some mean words. But then, your friends, people that remain by your side will very likely be as mean as you are. Because if they aren’t, they will become victims, or step back from you, or both. And because you are surrounded by people like you, eventually, you will become the victim of their mean words, or bullying.

One bad choice, showing vulnerability once and you will get the consequences of that poor choice of friends you made. That’s exactly how it works with spirituality. With your mean friends, mean spirits will join by affinity and they will, as you are sleeping, or lost in your own thoughts, do all that bullying I was talking about. And suddenly you realize that you don’t like your body anymore, that you are always melancholic, that you feel trapped when surrounded by too many people, and don’t know why. In spirituality paths I have known, we call this an Obsession. I will make a full post about it so if you are coming late in here, suggest you check this out.

What means that, who you are and who you surround with will mean the most regarding the spirits that will come close to you. And even if you are a positive person, a good soul that practices charity and speak the truth and have empathy by others, even being a natural good person, somedays you will find “Karens” on the traffic, or your boss you demand you something absurd or you will have a really big problem to solve, like your car being stolen. And you will be angry and sad and scared and those feelings will attract the wrong spirits if your door is open.

That is why self-improvement and awareness is the most crucial step for spiritual/psychic development, because your door will be open indefinitely and your guard must be up all the time.

Habits will change, thoughts, old feelings will be overcome and heal, and even being hard, the results are absolutely amazing and worth every tear. But you have to be willing to live the process, to embrace it and move forward even when it is very hard to do it. Shadow work, you must be aware of the term. But not just recognizing defects means truly putting some effort and energy into becoming a better person and healing from everything you didn’t cause yourself.

You will be angry about this but even not being our fault, living the traumas we have, we still are the ones responsible for healing them. And if we don’t heal, bad people, dead or alive, can use it against us. And the bad spirits that cause obsessions, the “obcessors”, as we call back home in Brazil, are experts in doing it. Sadness is an easy way to catch us, everyone has problems or had that unbearable day that we have lived that marked us forever, and it doesn’t matter if you are a good or bad person, anyone could be caught by sadness or melancholy.

Everyone has always made a mistake in life, something we feel guilty and regret about it. Good people will sometimes torture themselves with the regret of hurting someone else, someone they love, more than a bad person would. And you know what also gets us very easily? Guilt. And when I say good or bad, it’s not an absolute truth. Everyone on the planet is learning and evolving, some are doing better and some are doing worse. And that will say if we are pending more to one or the other side of the scale

All these being said, I will suggest:

1. Do therapy. It’s hard for us, especially if we are not used to finding our own flaws. So the therapist will help and lead you to the right path to go for healing and improvement. In the end is your job to make it happen, but still you will need guidance.

2. Meditation. All the processes I have been through that connected me to my spiritual guides, even during my time in Umbanda, happened with the valuable assistance of meditation. It was probably the most enlightening experience I have acquired in my daily life, that allowed me to evolve in several ways.

3. Study useful subjects. That’s my favorite point because, with the internet, you can find good audiobooks everywhere on YouTube and you can listen to them while you work, clean your house or drive to the grocery store. You can learn, especially about philosophy, psychology and theology. One day you listen about Buddhism and Theosophy, the next your listen to some lectures on philosophy, which is the beautiful logic study of people, and can teach us very deeply and fast how to become better. Next day, you can try Jung and the archetypes of Major Arcana in the Tarot. You can identify yourself and understand your processes in a very interesting way by learning from other people’s experiences and points of view.

I will suggest podcasts that talk with mediums, priests, witches, professors of philosophy, etc, that also are very enlightening, due to the fact it’s a conversation, with lay people sometimes, that can easily ask the same questions we would.

In YouTube Brazil we have Paranormal Experience and Medium Talks to suggest you guys to watch. They allow people with any and every type of paranormal experience to go there and talk about it. Maybe you can identify some of your spiritual experiences in what you listen there. I don’t know if they have English subtitles for all videos but they are really amazing for learning.

Another suggestion, and those have the subtitles in English for everything is Nova Acropole (New Acropolis), a philosophy series of lectures, for free from AMAZING professors that teach me a lot. I have more suggestions for materials but I will use them in other posts, to not be very messy here. The links will be above!

REMEMBER: you don’t have to believe in or agree with everything people tell you, but you must respect their POV and personal journeys! So be open minded while listening and absorb what resonates with you.

Summarizing, these exercises of self-knowledge, amongst others as diaries/journals, doing charity, Yoga and other practices, will be crucial for your spiritual journey to be useful, healthy and enlightening, so don’t be afraid of trying. One, or another, whatever works for you, but try. It’s definitely a good way to go and will make your life happier, independently of beliefs, practices and lifestyle. Hope this is helpful to you!

Love, Beca
